Intent
At Kingsway, we constantly strive to raise standards in English across the school and are working towards our school being an English rich school sending children off into the world with a sound knowledge of basic skills hooked on lifelong learning. We believe English is an all-encompassing subject and is at the heart of each curriculum subject, knitting together each child’s learning.
A child leaving Kingsway should be:
•able to listen, speak, read and write in a broad range of purposes and situations.
•able to express themselves creatively and imaginatively as they become enthusiastic and critical readers of stories, poetry and drama, as well as of non-fiction and media texts.
•reading and writing sufficiently, fluently and effortlessly for them to manage the demands of the curriculum at secondary school and life post education.
•able to reflect their understanding of the audience for and purpose of their writing by selecting appropriate vocabulary and grammar.
•prepared for secondary education by being able to consciously control sentence structure in their writing and understand why sentences are constructed as they are.
•able to understand vocabulary choice and age-appropriate, academic vocabulary. This involves consolidation, practice and discussion of language.
